Thiamine is one of the B complex vitamins and is known as vitamin B1. It is a water-soluble vitamin and is necessary for normal growth and the maintenance of health as it functions as a coenzyme in energy metabolism and in the metabolism of carbohydrates and branched chain amino acids*.
Thiamine is found naturally in both animal and plant sources; however, diets high in processed foods call for a higher need of vitamin B1*. Whole grains naturally contain thiamine as a component of the germ and bran of the wheat or the husk of the rice.
