After many years of consuming whey protein, I have finally reached the point of trying out a plant-based option. This is mostly due to health reasons as dairy is known to cause skin inflammation. However, I have long been interested in eating more plant-based for environmental reasons so my grounds for change are twofold.
Though eliminating dairy, in general, was a relatively easy task for me, I have been hesitating to switch over to a plant-based protein supplement. My two main reasons are taste and cost per gram of protein. Whey protein supplements are cheaper and have a smoother, less chalky taste. That being said, my experience trying out various vegan powders is very limited and mostly based on what others have told me.
After much research, I chose Body Energy Club's Clean Vegan protein powder. Boasting 30g of protein per serving (43.5g) and selling for $40 per kilogram, it seemed the most cost-effective brand to try. Despite there being a few close runner ups, the raving reviews of this one helped me make my final decision.
Now for the actual review of the product…
I must admit that the minimalist design of this brand was a nice change from many other "busy" labels that I have seen. No shiny, massively bolded words here to try to sell you something less than ideal! The two simple words "clean" and "vegan" are easy to see despite the thin, light blue font since the rest of the label leaves out uninformative jargon and silhouettes of muscular men. Everything a person would want to know upon first glance is nicely organized on the front and is reminiscent of a modern-day resume. This marketing design definitely worked its magic on me.
(I will insert briefly here that I am biased in my flavour choice. Chocolate is the most palatable flavour no matter what anyone says; vanilla is only good for baking and every other flavour is for children. Okay, back to the review.)
The first thing I noticed when I opened the lid was how powdery smooth the protein is. It is similar to the texture of cornstarch or powdered sugar and sticks to everything if one is not careful. The initial smell was not the most inviting. This may be because I am not used to the smell of non-dairy protein powders. My brain eventually interpreted it as dried bean essence with a hint of fake sugar. In the end, this is a highly processed product so I guess this is to be expected.
To test it initially, I manually blended one scoop powder with one cup of water by shaking it vigorously for about five seconds. Because of how fine the powder is, it quickly came together like liquidy pancake batter. Unfortunately, it does not taste like chocolate very much. If I had to describe the taste, I would say it is almost like frozen expired milk chocolate. It is a very light taste compared to other chocolate flavoured powders I have tried. However, what it lacks in taste, it makes up for in its smooth texture.
Next, I tried it in my usual morning smoothie. My smoothie turned into beautiful liquid velvet and had no issues blending with all my vegetables. Since the chocolate flavour is almost non-existent, it does not overpower other flavours. To make a chocolate tasting smoothie, I would suggest adding a bit of cocoa powder and natural sweetener.
Overall, I believe choosing Clean Vegan as my first plant-based protein powder was a great decision. Based on cost, protein serving per scoop, and its velvety texture, this brand is an excellent option for all athletes, not just for vegans. Though the taste is subpar, I respect the company’s decision to keep it low in sugars and artificial additives. It is perfectly palatable and easy to manage by mixing it with other ingredients. In conclusion, I give this product 4.5/5 stars and recommend that everyone give it a try!
