Insomnia & Sleep

Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which a person either is unable to fall asleep or wake-up during the night and being unable to go back to sleep. Regular good-quality sleep is important to keep your mind and body functioning properly. Unfortunately too many people, children and adults, experience insomnia at one point in their lives. Insomnia is caused by stress, worry & anxiety, aging, use of stimulants (caffeine, alcohol and certain supplements), excessive sugar intake, calcium & magnesium deficiency, use of certain medications, medical conditions & pain, sedentary lifestyle and irregular sleep patterns. + Read more >

Sleep apnea is condition that in which a person’s sleep is disrupted for several seconds at a time (at numerous intervals) within one hour caused by low levels of oxygen.  On the average a person should get about 8 hours of good quality sleep per night. However there are no set rules, because every individual is different and some people do feel well rested after only 5-6 hours of sleep. Quite often people reach for over the counter sleeping pills and prescription medication without being aware of the side effects or they are so sleep deprived that they rather suffer from these side-effects in order to get a good night sleep. The continual use of sleeping pills results in dependency or abuse for most people and some sleeping pills may even cause memory loss. While sleep medication might work for some people, however it is not the answer to your problem. Natural Sleep and insomnia supplements are safe to use and are very effective.  If you are one of those people who suffer from insomnia because of anxiety, nervous tension or monkey-brain thoughts then Skullcap might be just what you need. Skullcap is a mild relaxant; it aids in relaxing tense muscles resulting in a good night sleep. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone which controls your body’s natural sleep and wake cycle.  As we age melatonin levels decline also chronic stress, certain prescription drugs, sleeping pills and stimulants deplete melatonin. Taking melatonin sleep and insomnia supplements can help to regulate your sleep and wake rhythm. Passionflower is another natural sleep support supplement which calms the nervous system and it doesn’t cause drowsiness. Calcium and Magnesium supplements both help to relax the muscles and nervous system. Other sleep and insomnia supplements such as Lemon balm, Hops, Chamomile and Catnip can help to reduce anxiety and promote sleep.  The amino acid L-Tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that is responsible for normal sleep which aids to prevent insomnia. California poppy can be very beneficial to those that experience insomnia due to bodily aches and pains; it has been used by Native American’s traditionally for promoting relaxation and pain management. Although natural sleep and insomnia supplements are very safe and effective it is advisable not to become dependent on them. Insomnia itself is not a disease however it is a signal of an underlying health condition; therefore it is important to find and remove the root cause.  There are also other simple ways that help to improve your sleep. At dinner time eat foods that are rich in the amino acid tryptophan such as brown rice and peanuts which encourage the production of serotonin. Take a warm bath with a few drops of lavender essential oil before you go to bed. Lavender is a sleepiness inducer and has proven to depress the central nervous system. Avoid using cell phone, TV, computer and other electrical devices which emit EMF radiation within 1 hour before you go to sleep because they can all interfere with the release of melatonin. Arrange physical activities earlier in the day and avoid exercising late at night. Exercising late at night stimulates the body, making it more difficult to wind down and get to sleep. Meditation or listening to relaxation music 30 minutes before going to bed helps to calm the mind and displace all worries that have been built-up throughout the day. Create a sleeping schedule and go to bed at the same time every night whenever possible and don’t take naps during the day. The ideal time to go to sleep at night is by 10pm or at least before midnight, because the hours after midnight are less productive. In the meantime if you need to catch up on a few hours of sleep visit Body Energy Club and check out our vast selection of all natural Sleep and Insomnia supplements. Before starting any new supplements it is important to check with your doctor to make sure they are right for you, especially if you have a medical condition or are taking prescription medications.+ Read less >

    Lorna Vanderhaeghe Sleepsmart™ Herbal Supplements

Melatonin identified in 1958, is a hormone manufactured from serotonin (our feel good hormone) and secreted by the pineal gland. The human body is governed by an internal clock that signals the release of many hormones that regulate various body functions. Melatonin is most well known for its ability to control our sleep, wake cycles where it is secreted in darkness and suppressed by the light. It is also used to treat jetlag where it resets our internal clock when we travel by air across several time zones. Children have much higher melatonin levels than adults and sadly as we age it is dramatically reduced. Anti-aging specialists believe melatonin to be essential in retarding the aging process. Low levels of melatonin are also found in those individuals with sleep and depressive disorders.
